Gallery draws a crowd in more ways than one
Two years ago, Susan Mott, NDG’s most notable watercolorist bravely defied the odds, opening up a cooperative cozy gallery right beside Mesquite Restaurant.
“When I started this endeavor, I never imagined 9 ARTISTES 9 would be celebrating two years of great art created by talented local artists. My dream has come true,” said Mott whose paintings hang on the walls of four continents. Humble and community-minded, Mott believes in showing off … the artwork of others.

“I’ve been blessed artistically. And unlike many working artists, I have a strong sense of business. That being said, my vision was to have a group of artists working for the common good which is art. Competitiveness doesn’t apply at the gallery. It’s always a joy when a new customer comes in and enters a world of walls covered in a variety of paintings using diverse styles and mediums,” she noted, referring to acrylic, collage, oil, pastels and pencils.

Indeed, drawing is on her mind these days. In keeping with the gallery’s festive mood and believing that everyone is able to own art, Susan and her artist associates have ‘drawn up’ a great idea.

“For our birthday party, we are going to give our clients a present. For anyone wishing to purchase a piece of artwork, they get to draw a discount coupon that makes it all that more affordable.” Susan is a brilliant watercolorist and Renaissance woman when it comes to being resourceful about surviving in a world where commissions have replaced the loyal patron.
Ms. Helpful
So who is the maverick Mott? You may have seen her walking dogs in the neighborhood, driving an elderly person to a doctor’s appointment or schlepping one of her own paintings to donate to a charity. She’s Ms. Helpful. Sometimes, it’s hard to remember that above everything else she busies herself with, she is an artist.
“It’s sometimes hard to refocus on what my passion is: art!! I guess my second passion is dogs; I love walking them and painting them,” To date, she has painted 40 dog portraits. “Capturing the soul of a dog through the eyes always touches the owner. It’s one of the most rewarding experiences. Also a joy for me is displaying the artwork of other gallery members and the warm reactions of the public. It’s win-win situation for us all.”

Gallery co-founders include the astonishing Richard Boucher, who along with Susan also gives art classes on site, Barbara Sweeney and Jane Wigglesworth.

Susan sets the standard, and it’s an exceptional one. Look at her art and you know you have landed in the land of intriguing beauty. From her landscape and façade paintings to her flowers and country vignettes, she understands the mosaic soul of an artist. For Susan, art is worth celebrating. With already 4000 visitors to the gallery, she feels it’s time to give back. You’re invited to the party. Come cut the anniversary cake while making a toast to 9 ARTISTES 9. It’s happening Thursday, November 8th from 5 p.m. to 8 p.m. The gallery is at 5276 NDG Avenue, corner of Decarie. Call Susan at (514) 488-9009.
