Dispute over birthday dinner leads to stabbing of man in Barrie, Ont.

BARRIE, Ont. - An apparent dispute over a birthday dinner incited a woman in Barrie, Ont., to allegedly stab her common-law husband in the chest with a kitchen knife, police said Wednesday.
The couple was celebrating the woman's 46th birthday in their home Tuesday night over a few drinks when the alleged incident occurred.
Barrie police Sgt. Dan Mafturack said the man asked the woman what she wanted for dinner by saying, "Do you want ham, potatoes and vegetables, or potatoes, vegetables and ham?"
The query apparently upset the woman, who then allegedly grabbed the knife and stabbed her spouse in the chest.
Mafturack noted alcohol was a factor, and suggested the man's tone of voice may have triggered his wife's ensuing rage.
"It's not like he was offering her Kraft Dinner or baked beans or anything like that," Mafturack said. "He was probably being sarcastic."
The woman called 911 for help, but her husband hung up the phone. She tried again, but he again hung up, police said.
When police called back, the victim said he had only bumped his head and didn't want officers to come.
Police and an ambulance went to the home anyway - as is standard practice for emergency calls - and found the man in the kitchen with blood on the floor and a puncture wound in his chest.
He was taken to hospital for treatment and later released.
The woman was charged with assault with a weapon.
Their names were not immediately released.
